From September 2027, the era of phones in school desks will come to an end. We have a solution that will work anyway.
The government has approved it. On 20 July 2026, the cabinet unanimously backed an amendment to the Education Act proposed by Prime Minister Andrej Babiš and Education Minister Robert Plaga. If the amendment passes the Chamber of Deputies, the Senate, and the president’s signature, children simply won’t take out their phones at school from 1. 9. 2027. Not during break, not in the cafeteria, not in after-school care.
Parents of preschool and school-age children, this concerns you directly. Let’s keep it simple, without legal jargon.
Who does the ban apply to?
It will affect children in kindergartens, preparatory classes, primary schools, and the lower grades of multi-year gymnasiums and conservatories — in short, the entire compulsory school attendance period. High school students are out of luck from one side only: their phones will still be governed by the school rules, not the law.
What exactly is banned (and what isn’t)
Watch out for a detail that often gets lost in the news: 👉 the law does not ban having a phone, only using it.
- A phone can still sit in a bag or be locked in a locker.
- But the school may not keep it permanently — it must return it by the end of the school day at the latest.
- Exceptions apply for medical reasons (e.g. glucose monitoring), special educational needs, and moments when the phone is used directly in teaching.
Why now?
The Ministry found that 93 % of schools already have some rules in place, but it’s a real mess. The government points to recommendations from the National Institute of Mental Health: risk of addiction, anxiety, depression, poorer concentration. An interesting point from the explanatory memorandum — a phone doesn’t even have to be switched on to be distracting. It’s enough for it to be nearby. 📱
But does it work?
That’s where the numbers diverge. The government cites positive experiences from France and the Netherlands. But research by Masaryk University across 21 European countries found that while the ban does reduce distractions, it also increases misbehavior — the effects cancel each other out, and it has no impact on math grades. And perhaps the most important finding from the studies: when it comes to children’s real well-being, what matters most is whether you talk about technology at home at all — not whether the school bans phones.
What should you take away from this as a parent?
Whether the law passes in this form or not, one thing is already clear: a phone at school will be more and more of a hassle. A child must not use it, but still needs to have it with them “just in case” — so you can track them on the way home from school, call them, or so they can call you in an emergency. But a smartphone in a bag is an unnecessary temptation, an unnecessary risk of breaking or losing it, and something that will just start getting in the way of everything else at home again.
